While user behavior research has often focused on general employees, my research delves deeper into cybersecurity practitioners’ intentions regarding security control implementation.
In recent years, the sophistication of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has grown. This is impacting many business roles; cyber defenders included. What risks and opportunities are present that we should be aware?
As a cybersecurity consultant, I am developing AI agentic workflows to improve cyber defender processes. This opportunity creates questions for the cyberpsychologist in me; around how the mental health of our cybersecurity workforce will be impacted.
AI’s Role in Enhancing Cybersecurity Behavioral Insights
AI presents a transformative opportunity to bridge the gap between policy creation and human adherence. By integrating AI-driven analytics into cybersecurity frameworks, organizations may gain unprecedented insights into user behaviors, motivations, and compliance challenges. AI solutions, particularly those leveraging machine learning (ML) and natural language processing (NLP), could enhance security practices. Here are some areas:
- Behavioral Risk Analysis—Could AI models analyze cybersecurity practitioners’ actions and detect patterns that show security fatigue, policy resistance, or compliance gaps? These insights could inform targeted interventions to bolster security awareness and adherence.
- Adaptive Security Training—Could AI-powered learning systems personalize cybersecurity training based on individual behavioral profiles? Rather than generic training programs, AI-driven platforms could deliver customized simulations and real-world attack scenarios, increasing engagement and effectiveness.
- AI-Augmented Security Policies—Traditional security policies often suffer from a lack of engagement because of their rigidity. Could AI help dynamically adapt policies based on contextual factors such as role, access privileges, and historical compliance behavior, making policies more actionable and relevant?
- Predictive Acceptance Intelligence—Could AI analyze massive datasets to predict security control lapses before they lead to incidents? As my research refines security acceptance models (including personality traits correlations) could acceptance of cyber defenders be predicted? By identifying which cybersecurity practitioners are at higher risk of non-compliance, organizations could implement preemptive measures to mitigate threats.
- Psychological Profiling for Cybersecurity Leadership—Given that security practitioners span different organizational levels—from technical engineers to executive leaders; could AI aid in understanding diverse motivations and stressors? Could AI-driven sentiment analysis, for example, provide insights into the cognitive biases that influence security decision-making at various levels?

My research focuses on understanding the psychological drivers that influence cybersecurity professionals’ behaviors. There seems to exist a potential for aligning with AI’s ability to assess and predict human decision-making. The intersection of AI solutions and behavioral cybersecurity research presents an opportunity to create more intelligent, responsive security systems and processes. By applying AI in this domain, organizations could shift from reactive cybersecurity approaches to proactive, behaviorally informed, security strategies.

It could become a critical tool in shaping security cultures, fostering adaptive policies, and mitigating human-related security risks.
